Bonhams, the prestigious, London based auctioneers have concocted an ingenious method of showcasing the 2,000 piece luxury watch collection of a late European Nobleman.
In their upcoming “Alphabet of Time” auction, Bonhams will be facilitating the sales of timepieces from watch brands starting with every letter of the alphabet. The 2,000 strong collection was formerly the property of the late Jan Willem Frederik baron van Wassenaer of the Dutch De Van Wassenaer family, a dynasty that dates back as far as the 13th century.
Jonathan Darracott, Bonhams Global Head of Watches said: “This is one of the largest single-owner watch collections the world has ever seen. Looking through this assortment of watches, we realised that due to its sheer size and diversity, we were able to assemble the ‘A to Z’ of watch brands.”
Elaborating on the variety of the timepieces in the collection, Mr. Darracott went on to add: “What makes this collection so special is not simply its vastness, but the extraordinary variety of watches included. From the most renowned and exclusive watchmakers in the world, to independent manufacturers who produce only a few pieces a year”.
The highlight lot of the auction is set to be a Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Chronograph, with the Bonhams watch experts estimating that it will fetch between £20,000 and £30,000.
Referred to as the “TV watch” because of the chronograph’s rounded square face, the Swiss Patek Philippe replica watch is particularly sought after as it is finished in rose gold, and only 25 such editions were ever manufactured.
Another highlight will be a Rolex watch, with the iconic Swiss brand proving an obvious candidate to fulfil the “R” section of the alphabetical auction.
Estimated to sell for between £8,000 and £12,000, the Rolex Daytona ref 116528 is finished with a 40mm 18ct yellow gold case and is provided in mint condition.
The Alphabet of Time auction from Bonhams will take place over two separate sales: Fine Watches & Wristwatches at New Bond Street on 22nd June, and Watches & Wristwatches in Knightbridge on 22nd November. The following luxury watchmakers will make up the auction:
Arnold & Son
Lange & Söhne
Urban Jürgensen & Sønner
J & T Windmills
